What is a Marine Chartplotter?

Chartplotters are used in marine navigation that use gps positioning and electronic navigation charts. A chartplotter displays the electronic chart or position along with speed and direction of the boat. Chartplotters are resource intensive devices and therefore usually require a standalone unit. They are generally integrated with other marine devices including sonar and emergency locators called “EPRIB”. It is critical that the charts are accurate within the system and of course the gps unit that is feeding data into the chartplotter. Programmable alarms are usually available within the units to alert the captain of any deviation off course.
